Music and Mental Health

Many people view music as just a hobby. Maybe if you are good enough you can turn your hobby into a career. For some it’s just tool to help aid in their educational success. But in uncertain times in life, much like we have been going through most of this year, music is much more.

We turn to music to reinforce our emotions. Even if you’ve never played an instrument, you surely have your playlists  for happiness, heart-break, relaxing, and motivation. We k ow music affects us and we like to keep it near us.

But simply listening to a song doesn’t fully express the depth of feeling within us. That’s where learning to play an instrument plays a crucial part in our emotional health. It gives us the ability to express our inward feelings through the medium of music. I gives us an outlet that is one of the many ways to healing.

Why do you think there are so many songs about heartache and loss? The artist who wrote them have found the secret of using music to deal with emotions (and perhaps make a few bucks off of it).

But music doesn’t need words to express what is inside. Just the act of playing can express feelings that can’t be described. So when you find yourself in a tough time in life, take some time and sit down at you piano and play your favorite tune. Grab your guitar and strum through some chords. Give that drumset a good workout. And remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be worth it.
